The First Augmented Reality Poster

During a week-long hackathon in early 2017, we built the first AR poster. My idea was simple: instead of telling people what our team was about,
I designed a poster to show them.

Why a fox? Facebook has a long history of fox friendship. FB employees have taken to foxes ever since the first skulk (that’s a group of foxes!) made themselves at home on campus. Since then, FB Headquarters in Menlo Park has been deemed a Certified Fox Wildlife Habitat, and the employees even celebrate foxes in product with the Facebook Fox Sticker Pack.

Impact

It’s easy to look at this design today and see how crude it is. But with a week’s time in 2017, this project made its way to Mark Zuckerberg’s office and resulted in spurring an entire team to focus on this technology. Today, anyone can make their own AR Poster in Spark!

The Evolution of the AR Poster

Since the first AR Poster, Target Based AR has come a long way. Here’s an AR Scavenger Hunt experience we designed for F8.
